The Guide theming experience that existed prior to November 14th, 2017 was replaced last year by a new theming experience.
If you are still using the older Guide theming experience, you need to upgrade to the new theming experience. If you do not manually upgrade, you will be automatically upgraded. The automatic migrations have begun and will continue through the end of October.

Between the announcement and end of development, Zendesk will not make any feature enhancements to the older theming experience, but will continue to make minor bug and security fixes at our discretion.
When development ends, Zendesk will no longer address bugs and minor issues specific to the older theming experience. We will continue to resolve any major breakage in functionality until the removal date. When development ends, Zendesk will also no longer provide support for the older theming experience.
After the removal date, if you are still using the older theming experience, your account will be automatically migrated to the new theming experience.
At the end of 2017, we released a new Guide theming experience for customers, with an option to upgrade from the old experience to the new experience.
The new experience introduces:
- Updated user interface
- Ability to manage multiple themes
- Improved theme editor capabilities
- Import and export of themes
- Ability to develop themes offline

Maintaining an older version of a feature or product when a new version is available limits our ability to ensure a valuable experience with the new functionality and takes time away from supporting the new functionality. All of our Help Center theme investments/enhancements will be going into the new theming experience so this will be an overall much better experience for our customers.

To see if you are affected, navigate to:
Zendesk Guide > Guide admin > Customize Design
If you see the following message, your account will be automatically upgraded if you don’t upgrade yourself beforehand.
To move to the new theming experience before the automatic migrations, click the Upgrade Now button in the message, then select the themes you want to migrate.
If you don’t take any action, we will automatically upgrade your account to the new theming experience.
Is there feature parity between the customize design editor and the theming center editor?
All features for authoring and publishing your theme are preserved in the new experience.
One thing to note: We introduced two new limitations on themes based on file types and sizes. If your current theme does not meet these limits, we will still be able to migrate to the new theming experience. However, you will not be able to duplicate your theme or re-import it without some modification.
