After you create a query, datatips (sometime called tooltips) appear when you hover over a data point in the results. In this example, you can see a datatip showing the number of tickets for the Voice ticket channel.
By default, datatips contain the value of the data point you hover over. In this article, you'll learn how to customize datatips and comparison lines which highlight your results by comparing metrics or by displaying the difference between a data point and the highest value in the chart.
Customizing datatips
While datatips are generated automatically with your query, there are a number of settings you can configure to change their look and feel.
To customize your datatips
- With a query open, click chart configuration (
).
- From the Chart configuration menu, choose Datatips.
- On the Datatips page, configure the following values as required:
- Show datatip: Turns the display of the datatips on or off.
-
Mode: Choose between Datatips or Comparison line. Comparison lines highlight your results as shown below.
For area, dot, and line charts:
For tables, column, and bar charts:
- Line color: If you selected Comparison line, this changes the color of the dotted comparison line.
- Background color: Changes the background color of the datatip box.
For details of how to change the text displayed by a datatip, see the next section.
Changing the text in your datatips
As well as changing the color and style of your datatips, you can also change the text that is displayed in it.
To change the text in your datatip
- With a query open, click chart configuration (
).
- From the Chart configuration menu, choose Datatips.
- On the Datatips page, in the text box, type the text you want to display. You can highlight text and choose from formatting controls for text size, bold, italics, underline, justification, and color.
- Typically, you'll want to include data from your query results in the datatip. To do this, position the cursor where you want the query result. Then, click Select an element to add.
- Choose from the list of metrics and attributes you used in your query. The value is inserted into your datatip text.
Note: If you want to add a metric to your datatip, but didn't use it in your query, you can add the metric as a datatip (see Adding metrics as datatips).
- When you are finished, click the chart configuration (
) to close the Datatips page.
Example
You want to change the original datatip used in this article to read "You got 322,559 tickets in your Voice channel."
To do this, enter this text into the datatip text box:
This will give the following results when you hover over a data point:

Hi Rob,
Is it possible to make edits when you have multiple rows without it repeating multiple times? It looks like in your "Replies and # Tickets" example you're using the default datatips, but do you have a more complex custom example?
Hi Duggan, I've been having problems replicating what you're seeing in your screenshot even if I add multiple rows. While I don't have more complex examples, I'm happy to take a look into this and open a ticket if necessary.
Would you be able to share the query you're using so I can replicate it in my lab? Thanks!
Hi Rob,
I was using the "Tickets: Tickets created by date and selected attribute (top 10) [default]" query. You can see in the below that it works when you put nothing in the datatips.
Hi Duggan, thanks for the reply. It looks like the query you mention is a custom query and we'd have to take a closer look into that. I'll pull your question into a ticket so we can take a closer look at what's going on.
Once the ticket is resolved, I'll work on any doc updates we might need. Thanks!
Hi Rob, that was actually a default query directly from a cloned "Zendesk Support" dashboard, so nothing custom was happening there.
Hi Dylan, sorry for the misunderstanding and thanks for the clarification. I'm now able to replicate what you are seeing and, like you, don't see a way to stop that happening. I'll leave the ticket open with a record of what I've tried to see if we can get some more insight into this. Thanks!
Hi Rob,
Is it possible to have the Datatip displayed always instead of hovering over?
Hi Ivana Milkovic, unfortunately, that's not currently possible. It's a great idea for a feature though, so I'd encourage you to post it on our feedback forum at https://support.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/community/topics/360001200913
Thanks!
