Question
Can I require users to accept cookies first before using the Web Widget?
Answer
Yes. To handle the EU cookie law and GDPR compliance, Zendesk created the cookies setting API so you can require users to accept cookies first before using the Web Widget.
Here are some of the expected behaviors and suggestions for usage when you add the cookies setting API to your page or site.
- Add the Web Widget cookies setting API to your web page below your Web Widget snippet and set it to false to disable the use of cookies. Chat and Help Center authentication won't be available until the visitor allows cookies to be set.
- When consent is granted, typically when a user clicks accept on a cookie banner, call the cookies setting API again and set it to true to enable the use of cookies. Chat and Help Center authentication becomes available for visitors.
- If you don’t want the widget to load at all until cookies are enabled, use the hide API to hide the widget on the initial page load. Then, when you call the cookies setting API to enable cookies, also call the show API to make it appear.
For more information about our cookie setting API, see the guide: Cookies setting API.

Hi Tyler,
It looks like that article has been archived. I'm in touch with the knowledge management team to see if there's something current with the information in it.
In the meantime, did you have a specific question you were trying to get answered?
Hi Nicole S.
I am aware that maybe this is in the wrong place, however when I search for what I am looking for this is the closest I get:). So here it goes.
We currently have a closed help center where our users need to sign up and in to see our content. So we have our GDPR and cookie policy in the email that is triggered when they sign up.
However, now when we will open up our content but still plan to use google analytics for example, what is best practice or how other provide a allow cookie pop-up when they arrive to the Guide Help Center.
I know for example, that wordpress offers an built in cookies pop up capability. How does Guide handle this?
Thank you for input
Nicky
Hi Nicky -
Great questions! I am not an expert on cookies and pop-ups, but I'll see if I can find someone who can answer you better than I can. :)
Thank you Nicole, eager to hear more :) .
Hi Nicole S. , have you found someone :)? and do you recommend me to post a new post somewhere?
thanks:)
Hi Nicky,
Apologies for the delay. I hope to have some information to share with you soon!
Hi again Nicky,
Okay, I found out that what we usually recommend implementing a notification banner in your Help Center.
Here's how to do that: Adding a notification banner to your Help Center v2 .You can use this banner to inform end-users about cookie use.
I hope that helps!
