In the Professional, Enterprise, and Elite versions of Sell, you can dynamically insert personalized data into your email messages using merge tags. For example, you can use a merge tag to insert each recipient’s first name into a bulk email message.
Sell provides standard merge tags that include profile data such as name, phone number, job title, and so on. The custom fields that you create for your leads, contacts, and deals are also available as merge tags. For more information about custom fields, see Creating and managing custom fields.
To use merge tags in your email messages
- From a lead, contact, or deal card, select the Send an Email tab.
- You can select merge tags by clicking the Merge Tags icon in the format toolbar.
- Select a merge tag from the list, then click Select. If you created any custom fields, they will also be listed and available to insert into your email message.
When you send the email message, the merge tag will be populated with the corresponding data.
In the example message above, the second merge tag is a custom field. If the custom field has not been populated with data in the lead or contact’s profile, Sell will warn you of that and prompt you to remove it from your message.
If you use a custom field merge tag in a bulk message and some of the recipients do not have data in that custom field, the email message will not be sent to those recipients. You will receive a notification informing you that some of the recipients were not included in the email message and a link to create a new email message for those recipients.

''Custom field'' hyperlink above broken
Thanks Anders,
I've fixed the broken link.
Is it not possible to include merge tags, or alternatively, SmartLinks, as part of a URL in an email template? It seems like an obvious use case, just like you can do this in MailChimp and other email clients, yet I've tried it multiple ways and can't seem to get it to embed a merge tag within a URL and have the URL retain functionality... You have to leave the entire messy URL exposed rather than hiding it within a hyperlinked word. (Specific example: I'm using a Typeform questionnaire that uses hidden information (their name, last name, and email) to create the URL and it inserts that information into the form as pre-populated information. I want to send people their link, without exposing the lengthy URL. I could do this with merge tags if Sell would allow it. But the link breaks every time – it will not pull in the merge tag.)
Hi Kim,
Unfortunately, we don't have an option to use anchor text for URLs in merge tags. In this instance, if you are looking to do this with an anchor text you would need to send each email manually and use the hyperlink option. I understand why this would be a helpful feature. I would be happy to submit a feature request on your behalf as our product team builds our product roadmap with these requests.
