Question
How does the widget decide what language to show my customers when they load my website? Can I manually set the language to override the default?
Answer
By default, the Web Widget embedded in a website displays text in the end user’s language, based on the language of their browser. For example, if the end user's browser language is set to de for German, the widget will appear in German for that user. If the widget is embedded in a Help Center, it displays text based on the Help Center language setting.

Note: If you are using the pre-chat form, with a custom pre-chat greeting, the greeting will not automatically translate. To provide translations for your custom greeting, include those in the widget script with the prechatForm API.

Does this extend to articles viewed in the widget as well? That is, regardless of our localization settings on the external Help Site, will international users viewing articles from the widget within our site see them in their browser language (rather than seeing them default to English, for example)?
Hello Whitney Mitchell
Thank you for the clarification! The article content within the widget is actually translated a little differently than the widget interface itself. The article content within the web widget is translated the same as it would be on your help center page. You can see how that content is translated in this article: Understanding how translated content is displayed in your Help Center.
I hope that helps!
