Content blocks let you create content that you can share between multiple articles. This is useful for content such as disclaimers or boilerplate text that you want to create once, maintain centrally, and reuse in multiple places.
The reusable content is stored in a content block, which exists independently from article content in the help center. You can use content blocks in any article that is enabled to use them. In this article, regular text refers to any article text that you create that is not in a content block.
Guide admins and agents with permission to update content blocks can edit and update content blocks. When you update a content block, it is automatically updated in the articles in which it is used without impacting the article status. See Managing content blocks in articles.
Agents and Guide admins can work with content blocks.
Enabling content blocks for an article
When you create a new article or edit an article that does not already use content blocks, you can enable content blocks for that article.
The Articles API has certain limitations if content blocks are enabled. See Help Center API limitations with content blocks.
To enable content blocks
- Create a new article or edit an existing article that does not already use content blocks.
Note: If you are creating a new article or have made edits to an exiting article, save or publish the article.
- To the right of your article, in the content blocks dialog, click Enable to activate the content block feature in your article.
Activation takes a few seconds, then the message changes to specify that the article is now using content blocks. You are ready to start reusing content (see Creating and inserting reusable content and Managing content blocks in articles).
Disabling content blocks for an article
You can disable content blocks for any article that is already enabled to use them.
To disable content blocks
- Open an article that is enabled to use content blocks.
- Click Disable content blocks to deactivate the content blocks feature in this article.
Note: Deactivation applies to that article only. It does not apply to any content blocks you created from the content of that article. This means that any content blocks you used or created in the article are converted to regular text in that article. In addition, the article can no longer access any other reusable content (unless you reactivate content blocks for that article). The content block exists independently from the article in the help center. Any content in the article that you defined as being in a content block continues to exist, and you can continue to reuse it in any other article that has content blocks enabled.
- Confirm your decision by clicking Disable content blocks.
Deactivation takes a few seconds, then the article is disabled for content blocks. Any previously reused content converts to regular text and the message in the content blocks dialog changes. You can reactivate content blocks at any time.
Are images allowed in content blocks?
Hi Paul -
Images are not enabled in Content Blocks at this time, though we do plan to add them in a future release.
Is there a way to use content blocks in KC article templates?
Does the article need to be published to 'Everyone' in order to be able to enable content blocks? I'm trying to test something in a content block but it's not giving me the option. I only see the option in articles that are published and visible to everyone.
Nope, you should be able to enable content blocks on any article. If you're running into this issue we may need to raise a ticket to look deeper into it. Let us know and we're happy to help.
Please note that we, unfortunately, can not use content blocks in templates, because content blocks only integrate into articles themselves.
Have a great day and stay safe!
Is there a place where you can go within guide to manage the content blocks? or do they need to be managed within an article?
Any plans for making it possible to place content blocks in a table, or/and making a table to an content block?
we operate multiple brands so how can I include URL in the content blocks to be reused and directs user to the brand they are on?
Do content blocks support video links and updates/changes to those?
The most useful function of Content Blocks would be to allow us to permission various pieces of an article backed on client org/etc. Will/When will permissioning be supported
For purposes, Content Blocks won't be useful until they can:
Looking forward to getting my hands on this new functionality! I know this is a long shot, but any chance we can use content blocks in Community posts?
Hi! I was wondering has this feature being released yet or is still only EAP.
We’re happy to announce the release of content blocks - a simple way to create, manage, and reuse content. A feature that we are gradually releasing to all our Enterprise customers. More information can be found here: Announcing content blocks, a simple way to create, manage, and reuse content
You've pretty much nailed the gaping holes.
So glad you pointed this out. The rabbit hole of help articles led me to believe that you could use it across multiple Help Centers, so I upgraded my account, but quickly downgraded after reading your post. There really needs to be a solution that takes the work out of having to update the same information under multiple brands.
Hi David Bjorgen –
Thanks for your feedback above – for better visibility to our product team, would you mind posting this to our Feedback on Guide topic (ideally, using our Product Feedback Post Template to format your feedback)? That way others can upvote and comment on your idea. Thanks again!
Only available for enterprise? This is an essential feature and expected functionality by most users in today's world even at a base tier of software.
Too bad this is only for Enterprise users. We use Professional and this would be a great feature for us. Any chance you will make this available for Professional too?
If I need to add a link to another Help article within a Content Block, selecting Add Link, then Link to Help Center Articles only displays the last 5 articles that have been edited.
This means that if I need to add a link within a Content Block, I either have to edit the article to link to so it shows in the list, or I have to add it as a URL.
Is there any way to see the HTML within a Content Block?
And what is Code Block used for? I cannot find any information on this in the help.
Is there currently a way to enable content blocks for all articles? Making more use of them but getting frustrated having to enable it each and every time.
I definitely agree with you on this one that it will be better if this can be enabled for all articles at once. However, that feature is not yet available. Would you mind posting your use case to our Feedback on Support topic? We have a template you can copy and use in your post. Thanks!
we need to reuse contents accross several different sections and we are building articles with blocks. We have an issue with blocks because we simply cannot use them with image.
So at the moment we have no other solutions to copy-paste articles to put them in different categories and section and to maintain several different articles who are basically the same.
Is there a way around the block lack of image support ?
Will this feature be added soon ?
Hi Boris, thanks for writing in!
Content block for images is still not available currently but I checked the comments from these articles creating and inserting reusable information with content blocks and Managing content blocks in articles that content block for images is already in the plan and hopefully this will be released this year. There is no tentative date yet but we recommend posting a product about this in our community - Feedback Help Center - Guide to engage with other users who have similar needs and discuss possible workarounds. Conversations with a high level of engagement ultimately get flagged for product managers to review when they go through roadmap planning. Thank you and we hope this helps!
Is there now an ETA for using images in the content blocks feature? I also posted in your community.
Additionally, will the feature support videos and GIFs?
Is there a way to automate finding repeated content that could appear as Content Blocks?
Hi Nicole Saunders Do these content blocks work with third app integrations such as Lokalise? I am trying to translate one of our articles containing blocks but I am not able to do so. Any tips for that? Thanks!
I'm using bookmarks to show sections in a long article, but when I add a bookmark to a content block, it gets removed when I save it. Does anyone know how to do this?
My code is:
But once I save it, it removes the <a id="title2"/>
