How to edit/delete a category?

Hi Caleb - What theme are you using although from your post I think I already know.  For now I would go ahead and add a test article into those categories so that you can use the breadcrumbs to get to them and edit them.  I know this is not an ideal way to do this but this is what needs to be done.

@Dave - What are you needing help with as my post to Caleb was referring to a particular theme where you have to use the breadcrumbs to be able to get to the categories and edit them.

I have categories that need to be edited, and I've added test articles, etc but I still cannot find a way to edit the category itself. Am I missing something?

@Alli - What theme are you using.  Make sure that you are not in the "customize design" mode of a theme.  When you pull up your Help Center click on the category and you should then see "Edit Category"

I can't tell if I'm in the "customize design" mode or not, but I'm using The Wiry Merchant. The edit function is greyed out, and it just says Edit not Edit category. Is there a way for me to just scratch it all and start over?

    Hey Alli!

Can you post a screenshot of exactly where you are in your Help Center? That'll help us figure out what's going on.

    Hi Matt,

The "edit" button is grayed out because you're on the homepage. You'll have to visit the category in question, and then it will be clickable.

Example, here's a screenshot of my homepage categories. Edit is gray:

However when I click the 'Getting Started' category and visit that particular page, I'm now able to edit:

In the default Wiry Merchant theme, it looks like you'll have to do an extra step, since you can't really seem to visit the category upon click - it just opens up an accordion:

What you can do is click on an article, and then click on the category name in the breadcrumbs:

This takes you to the category itself, where you can see the edit button appear:

edit: updated images to make more sense

I am using "The Curious Wind" and I'd like to:

    • add the breadcrumb bar. How do I do that?
    • get the little widget that has the Edit Buttons. I don't see that.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Hey Daniel!

You add breadcrumbs by placing the {{breadcrumbs}} curlybars element on each page where you want it to appear. You can find out more about curlybars here: Using the Help Center templating language.

In order to access the customizations functions in Help Center, click on General in the black bar at the top of your Help Center, and click Customize design.

Bear in mind that if you are on the Essential plan, you will not have access to the advanced customization options in Help Center.

@workscopic - There are two ways you can edit your categories and sections.  One way is that if you click on your category or section within the Help Center the top bar will then show the "Edit Category".  A second way is to select "Arrange articles" from the dropdown that you posted above and click on your category or section from there where you will see the "Edit" appear.  Let me know if you have any further questions or you are still unable to edit.

    Hi Wes,

Thank you for your reply. I have no articles on my Help Center so I click on Arrange articles and this is what I have, I don't see any way to edit them.

@workscopic - I will have to find an account as I'm on a beta version so my screens look different that yours but from there you should be able to click on the actual section or category wording and that should link you to a page where you can edit.  Just let me know if thats get it and I'll find an account so I can duplicate your screens.

There is no options or way to click and edit, I've been behind support and they can't help me until I switch plans, frustrating...

Just in case some else is still trying to figure this out:

In Arrange Contents view you cannot click a category link because it triggers drag 'n' drop re-ordering. To actually open the link right-click it and open it in new tab

It's 3 years later and they've probably changed a bunch of stuff...I still can't figure out how to do this.

    Hey Monica,

If you're trying to just delete a category you can take a look at our documentation here: Organizing knowledge base content in categories and sections

Let me know if that's not what you're looking for!
