I was made the Sprout Social account owner temporarily so that I could activate the integration as a Zendesk Admin. Was on the phone with Sprout Social support and was getting repeated errors despite my credentials getting me successfully logged in to Sprout and ZD. The Sprout Social support agent told me that other customers encountered this problem due to SSO being enabled for ZD (related article: https://support.sproutsocial.com/hc/en-us/articles/202123568-Why-am-I-getting-an-error-when-connecting-Zendesk-or-Uservoice-)
Since we have SSO we tried both URLs in the integration setup and neither worked:
