Configuring the sidebar navigation menu in a Guide theme
I have implemented the Lisfy Zendesk Theme (along with the Expandable Multi-Level Menu option) and have a couple of technical questions that I am hoping someone in the support community can answer.
- I would like to increase the number of Sections that can display in our sidebar navigation menu. Currently, if I am not mistaken, only a maximum of 13 Sections will display. How does one go about increasing this amount? I am assuming that this is accomplished with a code adjustment (perhaps on the script.js file), but I prefer to not mess around with the block of nav. bar code before I get some authoritative direction.
- In addition to increasing the amount of Sections that can display in the Navigation Sidebar, I would also like for sections and subsections to show up and display hierarchically (so that users can easily distinguish between a section and a child subsection). Does someone know how to enable this feature and/or what code adjustments are required? I figured that the Multi-Level Menu option would offer this sort of multi-level hierarchical structure right out of the box, but apparently not: While Categories DO show up as parent items, Sections and Subsections are showing up in the menu at the same level.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Hey Marco,
Since this is a 3rd party theme, you'll want to reach out to the developers you purchased Lisfy from directly. They should help get your questions answered or at least point you in the right direction.
I'll also leave this post open in case other users have experience using this theme.
Cheers!

Hey Brett -
Thanks for the reply. Regretfully, although I have now made 3 separate attempts to communicate with the Lisfy developers, I have not received any response whatsoever. Perhaps someone else in this forum will be able to offer up some insights about configuring the sidebar navigation.
Best regards.

Hi again Brett -
Since I am not getting any response whatsoever from the folks / developers who put out the Lisfy theme, I am thinking about purchasing the Multilevel Sidebar Menu Plugin that Zendesk offers directly. A few questions:
1. Do you know if this plugin works with the Lisfy theme?
2. Does the plugin generally work 'out of the box'?
2. Do you think I would run into any compatibility issues / programmatic conflicts over the fact that our instance of the Lisfy theme already shipped with an Expandable Multi-Level Menu option? (There may be a way to disable the Menu option that shipped with the Lisfy theme; I am not sure on that.)
3. Would we be able to get support from Zendesk if we ran into an issue with Zendesk's Menu plugin?
Thanks again for your feedback and support.

Hey Marco,
I'm not aware of a Zendesk published Multilevel Sidebar Menu plugin. Do you have a link that references this plugin anywhere? Since I have no experience with Lisfy, I can't say whether or not the plugin would work alongside their theme. Most likely you'll need to do some testing on your end if you're unable to get ahold of their support team.
Whether or not we support the plugin and if it'll work out of the box depends on the plugin you're referencing. If you can send me a link I can definitely take a look for you.
Thanks!

Hey Brett -
Thanks, as always, for the prompt reply. I think you may be correct: The Sidebar Menu Plugin I was referring to is actually put out by Diziana. They are a 'Zendesk-Authorized Solution Provider', but perhaps this does not make a difference with respect to getting direct support from Zendesk. Perhaps I will reach out to Diziana directly and cross my fingers about getting a response. If you have any other suggestions or ideas about getting a multi-level menu to actually work properly with a 3rd-party theme, that would be most appreciated.
Best regards.
Marco

Hey Marco,
I would definitely reach out to Diziana directly as they're pretty responsive when users contact them :)
I'll keep my eyes open for any other alternatives solutions for you!

Thanks Brett. Yes -- I sent them a message.
Appreciate your input.

Hi Marco,
Did you ever find a solution to adding the properly nested subsections to the Navigation Sidebar? I have the same problem (sections and subsections on the same level) and haven't been able to find a solution. Thanks!
-
Hello Marco Haber,
Were you able to find a solution after contacting Diziana?
Thanks!

Hello Zoe and Devan -
With regards to our menu 'challenges', my solution has been to build out my own custom menu. I am not quite done yet, but I have made solid progress and now have sections and subsections properly nested in the layout. Basically, I make a couple of AJAX calls to the JSON files generated by Zendesk in order to pull all of the category and section data into the Guide. The data is rendered in an unordered list and I then use jQuery methods to move individual items (Categories, Sections) around so that the menu takes on the correct structure. It has been a fair amount of work but -- since I am building the menu from the ground up -- I now have complete control over its structure and layout. If you have someone available in your organization who has some fluency with web development, you might consider going the 'custom' route.

Thank both of you for following up on this. Marco, thanks for the advice - I wanted to see how far I could muddle through before calling in the programmers. $200 is a bit steep just to properly nest the categories, so I guess we'll also go the "custom" route.

Hey Zoe -
Actually -- when you consider what it takes (potentially) to build out a custom solution from the ground up, I do not think that $200 to fix the nesting problem is bad at all. I just wasn't convinced that buying the other menu product WOULD actually solve the problem, so I started exploring the idea of building out a custom solution. When I saw that I was making progress with the challenge, I just pushed forward and am now on my way to having something that works as my client wants.
