Is there any way to shorten the article URLs?
Posted Feb 23, 2022
During the regular website audit using SEMRUSH, issues concerning the Zendesk help center say "URL too long". Is there any way to shorten it for all articles to get rid of those issues?

Outside of revising your article titles so that they're shorter, there isn't much you'd be able to do. Do you happen to know how long is considered "too long" for SEMRush? I can then get this passed along to the appropriate product team as feedback.
Thanks!

Hey Eric! Around 75 characters are considered standard for SEMRush. I read somewhere that the URL works even if you remove the title out of it as long as the numbers are there. Please let me know if anything can be done around it for a permanent resolution.
Thanks for the update!

You're right about it functioning without the title. Though the html_url will always have the title, which is what SEMRUSH is referencing. I'm going to pass this along to the product team as feedback. If they let me know this is something they have on the roadmap to address, I'll let you know!

Yes, if you're encountering issues with Zendesk help center URLs being too long during your website audit using SEMRUSH, there are a few potential strategies you can employ to address this problem:
URL Structure Optimization: Review your Zendesk help center URL structure and see if there are any opportunities to optimize it for brevity. This might involve removing unnecessary parameters or restructuring the URLs to make them more concise.
Custom URL Aliases: Many help center platforms, including Zendesk, allow you to create custom URL aliases for articles. This feature can be used to create shorter, more user-friendly URLs that redirect to the longer Zendesk URLs. You can then update your internal links and any external references to use these shorter aliases.
301 Redirects: If you're unable to directly change the Zendesk URLs themselves, you could implement 301 redirects on your website to create shorter, more manageable URLs that redirect to the longer Zendesk URLs. This approach allows you to maintain control over your own website's URL structure while still directing users to the relevant Zendesk content.
URL Shortening Services: Consider using URL shortening services like Bitly or TinyURL to create shorter versions of the Zendesk URLs. However, be cautious with this approach as it may not be suitable for all situations, especially if you need to maintain consistency and transparency in your URLs.
Canonical Tags: Implement canonical tags on your website to indicate to search engines which URL should be considered the authoritative version for each piece of content. This won't directly shorten the URLs, but it can help prevent issues related to duplicate content and URL variations.
Consult Zendesk Support: Reach out to Zendesk support for guidance on best practices for managing help center URLs and addressing issues related to URL length. They may be able to provide specific recommendations or assistance tailored to your situation.
By employing one or a combination of these strategies, you should be able to mitigate the issues related to long Zendesk help center URLs identified during your SEMRUSH audit.
