View PDF's without having to download the file

Posted Apr 20, 2022

View PDF's without having to download the file, pretty self explantory.

Have many duplicate files on my desktop and downloads folder from wanting to quickly check information.

Would help not to have to go looking for the file on my desktop.

Stopping the need to redownload (creating duplicate files) to open PDF in a new browser tab in chrome.

Hello, this problem should be fixed now.

Katarzyna Karpinska How exactly can we view PDF without downloading? This should be normal feature of Zendesk IMO. I noticed in marketplace there is "PDF Viewer Pro" but it would cost, and has bad ratings.

Hi Jani Oksanen, it works pretty straightforwardly. If your browser supports this function (most of them do) and you click on a pdf link in your Help Center article it should open in a new tab.

Hello,

Thank you for the reply. I found this thread on "Ticketing System":
Therefore, I'm talking of the ticketing system, and not Help Center. If customer send us PDF in ticket, we would like to view it on browser instead of downloading it.

What I have found after my earlier message and probably will help others too who struggle with same:

1. Zendesk seems to force to download, so even if you have set i.e. Chrome setting to open PDF in browser instead of download, Zendesk will force it to download. So Chrome settings will not help.

2. I found out there is Chrome extension, that can be used, and it will allow to view the PDF in browser instead of downloading it, even if the source forces it to be downloaded. Name of Chrome extension I'm using and seems to work is "No PDF Download".

Katarzyna KarpinskaIndeed the solution from Jani works but it would preferred if we did not have to add a chrome extension for this. How to force this in zendesk support?

Oh, my! My apologies to all of you, I've made a mistake. When I wrote in this post that the issue is fixed I have not realized that I was writing in a Support feedback area of our Community.

We did indeed enable opening PDFs in browser from Help Center (Guide) but this functionality doesn't extend to Support. Unfortunately, I'm not responsible for Support enhancements so I can't say when and if this issue will be solved. Once again I'm sorry for the misinformation.

Any feedback on this from a Zendesk Support PM?

This is annoying our customer service agents, they work with a lot of pdfs on daily basis and it would be great if Zendesk wouldn't force a certain browser behaviour.

regards

Oskar

I just signed up for zendesk and was shock to see viewing PDFs was not a native feature. I’m going have to cancel now and find another help desk solution. All of our agents are constantly working with pdf documents.

I was very disappointed to learn that a feature as useful and seemingly simple to implement as viewing a PDF file without having to download it has clearly been ignored.

However, I've found a simple solution. If your browser allows for extensions, simply download the PDF viewer extension to your browser. Once it's installed you can view PDF's in your tickets without having to download them!

Make sure the extension is turned on!

Hello

My company has  just signed up for zendesk and we share the feeling of the other customer

viewing PDFs must be native feature.

Documents/forms are download on the laptopt of our agents. Please do your best to add this feature asap. Thank you

FYI,

The extension  "No PDF Download" is also available for Firefox

you may also want to give the PDF Attachment Viewer app a try. It allows support agents to preview PDF files right within the tickets without the need to store documents/forms on your agents' computer + works in any modern browser (no browser extensions needed)

Native PDF Viewer & Extractor is what you are looking for! It is a secure and efficient way to handle PDF attachments directly within Zendesk.

Why it stands out:

  • No External Viewers: Unlike other apps, it doesn’t rely on Google Viewer or third-party systems. Your PDFs stay entirely within your Zendesk instance. No data transfer to Google/Microsoft servers.
  • Works with Private Attachments: View private or public PDFs seamlessly without downloading.
  • Text Extraction: Easily copy text from PDFs (if extractable) for internal notes or faster responses.
  • Streamlined Integration: Fully client-side and natively integrated, with no extra plugins or setup needed.
