SEO - Search favours results with keywords anywhere in article over headings?

Posted Feb 14, 2023

Hello,

I have a problem with search results in a ZD knowledge base. For some searches, ZD is giving the top result as a topic that contains the search terms *anywhere* in the body of the article. These are taking top rank over articles that contain the search terms in the title. This is causing a problem as certain wording, such as "issue with <feature x>" often appears in "release notes" articles. These should not be favoured over the actual articles about <feature x>.

Is there a way to make titles and headings take priority in the search? Maybe a setting somewhere?

Hi Craig,

When it comes to SEO the Help Center is focused on Content, Links and Structure. Help Center knowledge base (KB) articles and community posts include automatic meta description tags, using the first 140 characters of your article or post. For KB categories and sections and community topics Help Center, uses the description you include as a summary of what the category, section, or topic is about. Unfortunately, we don't have a way to modify it.

For more information on how to further optimize your Help Center please refer to How you can optimize your Help Center for search.

I also wish the Help Center search was a lot more like Google.

Why would an article with "topic planner" in the title not show up when I search "topic planner"?

It does on the second click of the search with no change to the text.

I often demonstrate to end users how to find our resources and then look foolish when it doesn't show up. I now say to them not to search for too long, just reach out to us and ask. This costs us the extra capacity required to support them as well as harms our reputation. We provide a user-friendly interface in our own software which is let down by poor search functionality when looking for our knowledge base articles.

Would you happen to have any plans to improve the Help Center search? And if not, can I implore you to reconsider?

Thanks

Hi all,

The search results are ranked based on a relevance score which is influenced by various factors you have impact on. You can read more about the relevance score in this article.
Also, your frustration with search is understood and we are working on new search features which will improve both the relevance and user experience of help center search. Our goal is to make your end users be able to search in their natural language and be able to effectively find answers to their questions. Stay tuned!

Cheers!
