Audit log needs - Need filter for hour of the day, and need API Token description present
Posted May 30, 2024
Hi Team,
Our organization had a significant event where data from Salesforce was overwriting data in critical organization fields incorrectly. We found it incredibly frustrating that the Audit log in the admin center could not:
- Allow you to filter by hour of the day
- Show the API token description, if a token was responsible for the behavior.
For #1, I was able to find the data I needed because I could sort the events by creation date, and the event I was looking for was earlier in the day. It's silly that I can only filter for the day of, where I'd have to scroll throug countless pages
For #2, I had to rely on Zendesk support to tell that an API token that was created under my account, was related to an automated function used by another group. Support was able to give me the API token description in the config, where as the audit log only showed that it was a token created by me, which was not helpful.

Hey Jimmy Rufo ! I'm the Product guy looking over audit logs and just wanted to pop in and respond directly.
For the time specific logs – It looks like this is actually a UI thing, rather than a technical one – meaning through the API you should be able to get specific throught the created_at filter.
I'll look into what we can do on UI side to get that surfaced. No ETA as of yet, but I agree its vital so will try to get this on our agenda for sometime this year.
As for the description within the Audit itself – let me do some digging and get back to you. I agree, if there is no unique identifier, it's essentially noise. I'll see what we can do to get that resolved.
Thanks again for uncovering both of these!

Yes me too. Exporting the CSV log is too large for Excel so there is no way to use this. Our system started in 2019. It cuts off the data in July of 2023 with 1,048,576 lines. I can't get to recent events.
