Attachment Handling with Multiplacement
Posted Oct 03, 2024
We are super excited to test the multiplacement feature and thankful for the development and continued improvement ongoing now! One specific behavior I'd like to raise is that, due to the individually placed articles all technically being automatically-synced unique articles, the article attachments appear to need to be handled manually and individually across all placements, and all attachments.
I could see this quickly being unsustainable for articles with attachments and several placements; or articles that have several attachments and any multiplacement. It defeats purpose of multiplacement for us, and seems opposite of expected default behavior to replicate the same article.
I know we can use Media Library to find and select the same piece(s) of media to re-attach to each individual placement, so that's good to prevent media attachment duplication. However this is extremely tedious/manual, you have to “know” which exact file to include (hard to manage with different authors), and a little risky to repeat correctly all times.
Either this is already being worked on, or I just don't understand the behavior yet.
If not, maybe a solution could be:
When creating a new placement, a dialog box appears confirming YES/NO if all attachments from the *original* placement should be preserved in the new copy as-is? This would create the new placement while identically including attachments, and it would continue to stay linked/in sync with whatever happens in the primary article (like the article body does… i think).
To manage attachment behavior after that initial creation and option, maybe a checkbox/toggle setting also exists within each placement, that gives both options (companion/equivalent to the dialog box during creation). At any time, the options could be selected:
- Attachments synced: Links/locks the attachment status to match the original (keeps them in sync with the primary article as above; could be default behavior when creating placement),
- Attachments unlinked: Disconnect and allow individual attachment management per “child” placement, as the behavior seems to be now.

Hi Joe, what does that mean? Is that related to the multiplacement EAP or my feedback? I didn't understand the empty page you linked to. Thanks.
