Michael Bierman commented,
Can a zendesk rep comment on the intended use cases of this feature? I'm not getting how this can be really useful.

Michael Bierman commented,
We are currently working on a solution to provide a revised experience for login, which will require fewer clicks.
I have lost track of how many times a Zendesk representative has said this.

Michael Bierman commented,
I had a customer furious with me (my company) the other day because of this exact issue. Their attitude was, that the entire experience left them frustrated and angry. They were not placated by the knowledge that this was zendesk's fault. They felt like we had let them down.

Tom Gaynor I think this issue is at least two years old. Unconscionable.

@max, it is suboptimal for most browsers and broken for the browser with dominant market share. So really poor situation overall.

@Brett Bowser as best I can tell things are working as designed. The design is just poor.
As @Joseph Crivello said, requiring Enabling cross site tracking is a terrible approach that puts users at risk and undermines state of the art browser security.
Looking at my Chrome settings again, the problem could be that I have, "Block third-party cookies" set on. I don't recall if this is Chrome's default but I think that is what Chrome calls the Safari setting in @Tiago Soromenho's post.
So it is likely that if I am willing to lower security for all websites perhaps even Chrome can use this workaround. Since Chrome is my primary browser I will keep the setting where it is. But that forces me to compromise Safari and switch to it if I want to easily sign into a zendesk powered portal.

Michael Bierman commented,
@Tiago Soromenho Correct, if the cookies are intact this is only a problem in Safari the first time you login. Of course cookies don't always remain intact and functional.
But yes, the Safari experience is better than other browsers when visiting a zendesk powered portal, but Chrome based browsers are still fully broken. I can't think of anything else in my daily workflows that are browser specific. This isn't 1990.

@Tiago Soromenho This is what I see on Safari (macOS)
If I logged out and back in I skip the extra dance back and forth (at least for now). I don't know how long lived this workaround is in Safari.
I do know that it does not work whatsoever in Chrome which means variants like Edge and Brave also don't work.
I find it appalling that zendesk has not solved this problem by now.

Michael Bierman commented,
@... Thanks. It sounds like maybe there is finally some hope of a solution though the timeframe is still unclear. I don't think anyone is being particularly nasty or making personal attacks. The facts are that serious problems that were ignored for a period of years. More than once representatives of Zendesk promised that a solution was in the works and nothing happened. This isn't some minor feature enhancement that was ignored. It impacts every Zendesk customer and many of their customers in turn. It is natural there will be a little heat over that.
You are 100% correct that zendesk needs to both fix the problem(s) and repair the trust with the community. These are not easy things to do. But they are essential things. I would say (and have in the past) that all other work should have been put aside until this was fixed. It is that crucial to Zendesk's business. I sincerely hope this time work is really happening and we will see the results sooner than later.
