I tell my various Explore users to create their own dataset as a light security feature. There is no way to share that dataset or the queries associated with it. If you want multiple people to be able to edit a query, you need to base that query off of the global dataset that everyone has access to.

You can clone the existing query over to the global dataset, but if there are any customizations (calculated metrics for example), you'll have to recreate those. Keep in mind, anyone with editor privileges will then be able to modify that query.

There are definitely some shortcomings in the security/sharing aspect of Explore, but hopefully what I provided helps you.

I cloned the default dashboards and queries, then I could make any change I wanted to my custom dashboards.

That's what we do for queries we want to restrict. The original question was about sharing with other users so that more than one person can modify the query. The method you describe doesn't allow for sharing a specific query.
