It's definitely not a substitute and ZenDesk should implement the feature natively, but I find Dark Reader works perfectly and costs no money. It's free to use. You can set it up to only turn ZenDesk Dark and leave other websites alone.

This one is maintained by me. There are some reports of it not working for some users, but I'm not sure why.

Please let me know if it ever stops working for you, and I'll create a fix.

That's not a bad idea! If you can give me more details on how that would work, I can try to add that in.

For example, would it only play a sound for tickets updated in the current filter/view you are in?
Or would it play a sound any time the ticket # displayed next to the filter/view names incremented?

I know it's not the ideal solution, but there is a new Chrome Extension that does automatically refresh the ticket views: ZenDesk Refresher

I know this isn't a native solution, but I found that Dark Reader (Free) extension works seamlessly with ZenDesk.

Hey all, while the Dark Reader extension formerly had issues with ZenDesk in the reply area, this seems to now be fixed.

So now it works seamlessly with ZenDesk. I think it's the best Dark mode extension out there.
