Markdown support in Community

    Hi Philippe,

We started out by having Markdown support, but we are slowly turning away from that again in Community. It simply doesn't work very well when you have a WYSIWYG at the same time and with the many flavours out there (GitHub flavour being one of them) it's extremely difficult for users to know which features are supported.

We do not expect to be supporting Markdown in the future. While it works for some, we've found that less technical users do not find it useful and are more used to WYSIWYG, so we will be focusing our attention on that.

    Hi Christian,

I think that the main issue for less technical ppl would be to have a good set of shortcuts to quickly add markdown syntax (see how github does it) as well as a real time preview. Most posts that don't need any special formatting (like your response) wouldn't be affected and I am convinced that after one post, most users would get it. I currently had to edit my own posts many times for them to display properly (i am not able to create sub-lists for example).

WYSIWYG vs Markdown debate aside, is there at least a way to have access to the HTML generated by the WYSIWYG editor so we can fix the issues by hand? (the HC article editor allows access to the HTML but not the community editor).

    Thanks!

    Hi Philippe,

I see your point of view, but I tend to disagree and our research don't point in the same direction.

But no there isn't a way to see the underlying HTML. We don't really want to expose that, as the complexities are quite difficult to work with and support. but it would be great to hear what problems you are experiencing with the WYSIWYG, so we can focus on getting them fixed.

    Hi Christian,

The problem is that the formatting options are too limited.

If markdown isn't an option, shouldn't you at least offer HTML editing options? I'm trying to add fontawesome icons to my community posts. These are supported in the code, but I can't because I can't edit the HTML directly.

Just wanted to add that "the complexities" are surely no different from those in regular Help Center articles, which do have full HTML source code editing.

https://support.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/203691016-Formatting-text-with-Markdown It does not work as described.

For example, when I add code like this http://prntscr.com/dit73o, the code is stripped and we receive content like this: http://prntscr.com/dit7av

Is there is a way to display programming code as it is? At this moment we have troubles with that because we send code snippets to clients, and they receive wrong code.

One more vote for something like markdown in community. Please give us the option to turn it on.  When the business case is providing community support to developers, code snippets is a must have feature, just as much as community management features.

Clearly Zendesk knows how to turn it on per instance:

    https://support.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/223933127-Crash-when-presenting-the-Review-dialog-Android-

as when we view source the tag "post-body markdown" it points towards that you support it for your developers.  Consider making it available as a plug in?

Just flagging another vote for the option of client facing markdown. when all your clients are technical or even semi technical, no one wants to be burdened with wsywig. I don't care if its not default, or even if its either/or, but please don't simply exclude it.

This feature is an absolute must, especially for companies that provide developer documentation via the Help Center.

For example, I started a new thread in my Help Center where customers can submit compatibility issues that they encounter. I pasted a code snippet in the thread that customers can implement until a new version of our software is released. Without code formatting, the response looks messy and unprofessional.

    Kind Regards,

    Hi Clayton,

Are you referring to adding post and comments in the Community section of Help Center? Because you should already now be able to format it as code, by selecting code in the format drop-down:

    Hi Christian,

Thank you for pointing that out. When hovering over the option it has a tool tip that says "Paragraph Styles" and I incorrectly assumed this was not related to code formatting but rather indentation etc.

    Kind Regards,

Our community is supporting software engineers. Markdown option would be very helpful.

This could be achieved in Zendesk as they use TinyMCE under the covers and could implement this plugin to allow it - https://www.tinymce.com/docs/plugins/textpattern/

Zendesk research from 3 years ago did not support markdown. Fair enough.

Have those conclusions changed 3 years later, now that markdown is far more widely supported and consistently implemented across most of the rich text editing scenarios on the business internet?

At the very least, you could give us the ability in themes to use our own editor, no?

    Hey Scott and others,

I am the new(ish) PM for the community offering.

I think this makes a ton of sense for a community feature. We are always changing priorities and focus as our customers and business change. I will do some exploratory research and see if we can potentially use the existing implementation we have developed for the article editor inside the community editor.

    Stay tuned.
