Functionality for tree navigation
Hi all,
Perusing the ZenDesk's Pinterest site for knowledge base ideas, I stumbled across a site that uses tree navigation for categories and articles:
https://support.sparefoot.com/hc/en-us/categories/200162506-SpareFoot-101
This is EXACTLY how I need to arrange my content. Does anyone in the community know how to accomplish this?
Thanks!

Hi Chellie,
That is a great design. I talked to SpareFoot about their design a while back. I think it took a fair bit of code to make that work...they worked with some developers outside of their team, I believe.
I'll reach out though to see if there's anything they share with the community.
Thanks!
-
If nothing can be shared, I'll see if I can replicate what they have done and release it to the community. May can include it in the next theme I release.
-
Thank you, Jennifer and Wes. Your help is greatly appreciated! :-)
-
Sorry, I haven't gotten anything back from Sparefoot. Maybe Wes will have more luck coming up with something for you!
-
Thanks, Jennifer. I appreciate your help.
It looks like JQuery may have been used to develop the tree navigation?.....Wes, any thoughts?
-
@Chellie - Sorry I'm traveling to the west coast this week and I have a Help Center that I have to finish up for a client before I get a chance to look at it. It will probably be at least a week before I can play around with it.
-
Thanks, Wes. A week is fine. Safe travels!

Hi Chellie,
I heard back from our friends at Sparefoot. Apparently the navigation tree is a very advanced customization that their developers have been working on for a while. It's not something that's easily sharable. Sorry about that.
But I'm sure they are happy to know that you like their HC, and all their effort is worth it! Good luck with your Help Center.
-
Thank you for checking on that, Jennifer! I understand their need to protect their work. But it is good to know that ZenDesk can handle something like this.
I'll see what @Wes does with the theme when he returns.
Appreciate the help!

Just a bit more info for your from Sparefoot, Chellie:
It is built using Javascript and jQuery, and then obviously HTML and CSS. The navigation concept is an ‘accordion’ style: http://jqueryui.com/accordion/
Hope that helps! Yes, maybe Wes can work some magic when he is back.
-
Hi Jennifer, yes, that does help. Figured it was a jQuery thing. Thanks!
-
@Chellie - I just wanted to let you know that I'm currently testing a new feature in Zendesk that I can't really talk about but it may make this type of code alot easier to implement. I'm playing around with it now and I'll let you know how it goes.
-
That's awesome, Wes! Understood that you can't talk about it, but can you say if the release might be sooner rather than later if all goes well? This will help me plan things out a little better.
-
@Chellie - What I'm playing with and testing is very new and I have no idea about the timeframe at this point. Sorry I can't offer any more information.
-
Trust me, Wes, I totally understand. No worries. Keep me posted on whatever you can share... :)
-
Hi,
The SpareFoot tree view of the help contents looks great to me.
Wes : is this tree view available ?
Cheers
Sam
-
@Sam - This is not available out of the box as you will need to use the API to call the categories, sections, and articles in order to accomplish this. This modification would require some development.
-
@Sam, it was a huge effort on the part of my developers to get this accomplished. Forewarning: There is a limit to the number of API calls, so if you have a large knowledge base then be prepared for some frustration.
-
We're wanting to implement this as well. Can anyone help ...
-
Hey DS RF,
Looks like one of our community moderators replied to your post here: Looking for developer to create jQuery Accordion Navigation Tree
Cheers!
