Login Modal
I found several articles stating we cannot customize our login screen. One solution was a modal that pops up over the page itself. How do I enable to modal for our theme?

It's true, you unfortunately cannot customize the login screen or login modal at this time. However, if you'd like the modal to pop-up over your homepage, you'll have to un-check this option in your general settings:
Now anonymous users can view your site, but when they click the sign-in button, it will be a modal pop-up with your site in the background:
