Organizing Queries

Agree - generally, the queries list could really use some additional columns:

    • Dashboard it's used in
    • Created by (user), created on (date)
    • Maybe some folder structure?

A similar thing is happening with calculated metrics and calculated attributes - once you start having more than a handful, it's getting hard to manage without a centralized view of all of them, and especially where they are used.

Same here...I understand this the first iteration of this reporting solution but so far its lacking many features and "user friendliness"  that would prevent me from moving from Good Data to Explore.

I started a post on the lack of details regarding queries here

    Dear all,

Thank you for sharing your feedback.

We will soon be starting a research project which aims at identifying the best way to help you manage large collections of objects (queries, datasets & dashboards). The question we will be answering is - how can we shorten the time it takes you to find what you're looking for.

We'll reach out back to the community when we kick-off the project & will welcome early feedback,

    Kind regards

    Vincent

I would love to participate in this project if you need volunteers. The current query management system is not conducive to sharing usage across many users and expecting people to be able to find what they need.

Love this feedback. Adding folder structuring ability for queries would be great. Seeing a huge list doesn't help me find what I want easily, and while naming conventions could help with that, the names of queries cut off...

+1 I'd like folders for both queries and custom attributes/metrics.

Hi Michele and Mohammad, we have some exciting news. We are wrapping up the design of the experiences that will enable you to better organize and find your content. We will be starting with queries and dashboards - custom metrics and attributes will follow later on. We will be able to share more information on availability timeline in the coming months.

Hi Govindraj Shetty, thanks for reaching out. We have started the development of various features which will help you better manage your queries. We will be releasing improvements & new features in that area in the course of 2020

I do think it is worrying that the migration out of Insights/GoodData is starting before the Explore tool is actually usable. We have 100s of reports to re-create but I can't imagine starting before being able to organise them.

Any update on this?  We started the migration over and just with one Dash we are already up to 128 Queries. I still have over 100 reports to migrate over from GD and having no way to organize queries is making this a very daunting task.

Hi Elise Doherty, WW Admin - Jenn S., thank you for reaching out.

We have a identified a number of projects to help you better manage and find your content:

    • We made it easier to re-use a query you find on a dashboard by adding the actions ("save as", "add to dashboard", "export") when editing a query from a dashboard -> done end 2019
    • We will soon make it easier for you to better understand the impact changes you're making in the Query Builder could have on other dashboards by listing all dashboards where that query is used -> in Feb 2020

    Coming next:

    • We will make it easier for you to find your queries by introducing "a filter panel" to the left of your queries' library with preset filters to start with. You will also be able to control the columns you want to see in that view, and decide what's relevant to you.
    • We are then planning to introduce "favorites" - so that you can easily decide what queries you want to keep a close eye on.
    • Finally, we are planning to introduce "tags" - which will allow you to better classify your queries

    Kind regards

    Vincent

Would it be possible as part of these updates to consider adding an area for adding new custom metrics? The current experience (Create New Query -> Calculations -> New x metric) is cumbersome when having to create many at a time, especially duplicates. Without a metric manager, you have to open a query and hope that you aren't tampering with what's shown while making those changes.

+1 to this - we have 3 or 4 people adding queries to our system and it is already a huge mess. Having favourites doesn't help much because you cannot organize reports for all users. For example, if I have a base report and I add it to my favourites, then create three copies for different dashboards, everyone else is now seeing 4 reports that they cannot filter out. A folder system and saved search queries (probably with some extra filtering) would go a long way towards organizing this.

As was pointed out by others we also have the same issue with custom metrics/attributes, which is probably worse because those don't appear to be sorted in any way, and you cannot manage them or see which ones are being used. Please fix this!

When are we going to be able to create folders to organize our queries?  I currently have over 100 queries and not being able to organize them is very frustrating.

Curious about this as well.  We have over 1100 queries between the people running different reports for various entities throughout our organization.  A folder system is a must so I (and my other users) can organize all the queries built for different team dashboards!

Also perhaps I am missing something, but is there no way to page through queries?  I can only see 30 at a time unless I change filters, which ultimately jumbles what I'm seeing (unless I'm looking for oldest/newest).  I have the bookmarks on the left which are okay, but to clean up data (deleting unused queries), I feel like we should have the ability to page through these.

It's very hard to keep things organized with multiple users and we are having to spend time meeting with leaders to develop organization/best practice strategies and training for new users rather than actually using Explore.

Hi, as Vincent mentioned a while back, query tagging is coming very soon which will help you organize your queries. Keep an eye on our announcements section at https://support.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/sections/200623776 to be the first to know.

Michael, although only 30 pages are displayed initially, if you keep scrolling down, subsequent queries will be loaded. If it's not working like that for you, please let me know.

Thanks Rob, I am definitely not seeing that functionality on my end (scrolled and waited about a minute).  I'm currently at the mercy of the top 30 queries per filter.

Thanks for following up Michael. I'm going to open a ticket on your behalf so someone can work with you to figure out what's going on. You should receive an email soon.
