+1, this is a pain in the neck. I don't even want the updates panel - it's unnecessarily taking up valuable screen real estate.

+1. This is so basic I struggle to see what the fuss is and why it wasn't done years ago. I'd also challenge the notion that it's such core functionality that it is hard to change - if this is true...
