Using the HTML editor to add alt text may be practical, but efficient it is NOT. It's a PITA to find in the HTML, for a start, and when I use the same image in more than one place the alt text does not travel with it and has to be redone. Sure, I can make the images into content blocks but that's another convoluted step that can't be done in bulk. What's wrong with simply keeping metadata with images?

Jane M Langschied, you're right! Thank you. It's been placed as far away as possible from its original position, shrunk down, renamed to "View", and hidden under a chatbot. I can't think of a single problem that could possibly have been solved by this change.

Now that the Save and Publish buttons have moved to the bottom of the screen for reasons unknown, Publication Status has completely disappeared, and with it the ability to preview the article. Please bring them back ASAP because I'm flying blind now. I've already had situations where teammates didn't notice that they forgot to publish.

I agree - this is a huge headache. I copy-paste HTML into articles from another source, so image links are always initially broken and have to be inserted manually. It was already a PIA but having to choose from the entire range every time just makes it worse. You can't even sort them.
