Defining Account Level Thousands Separator and other general formatting

Posted Jan 09, 2019

The Explore default for the thousands separator is a space, which is not commonly used.

I understand how this was chosen, but for a US company it makes no sense, which means that this needs to be changed manually for EVERY query and even after simple modifications when editing queries.

It would make sense to set the default based on the user locale, account country, or some other general preference that can be edited once by the account admin so we don't need to keep replacing spaces with commas.

I would assume this would also be useful for EU clients, to set commas and decimal points the way they like it...

Thanks!

I had the same thought, and I found that you can set that to be a comma (or whatever) at a global level.

1. When editing a query, click the Data Structure button from the right
2. Click the arrow to expand any of the Metric folders
3. Hover over any metric and click the dropdown arrow to the right of the name, then click Edit global display format
4. Set the dropdown to "Custom" and then set the Thousands separator field to be a comma (remember to delete the space) or whatever you want

Thanks for sharing that solution, Elizabeth! Really helpful.

I don't have the data structure icon available when editing a query.  It flashes briefly when I select edit, then does not appear in the list when the screen has refreshed. Any suggestions?

Hello @Janet Hunter,

What you've described is an older feature that we no longer support within Explore. Now in your standard metric, you have an options section within your query builder.  I've attached below a screenshot that shows where you can find this within your Explore instance.

Best regards.

@... - I'm not sure this addresses the original request. I believe the request is to be able to have some kind of global setting (similar to the options for the CSV export) in which you can a default thousands delimiter for every query.

Currently the behavior requires US customers to change that for every query one-by-one. The screenshot appears to still be specific to A query instead of ALL queries.

Or do I misunderstand?

Is there an answer forthcoming on setting the thousands separator globally?
