If a tag is not used in a ticket for 60 days it will get dropped from your Zendesk Support account's indexing. So, if it isn't on any tickets and your agents do not apply it, it will eventually effectively delete itself from being suggested.

For more information, see the following article:

Why aren't my tags auto filling any more?

You can only remove tags from tickets before they reach status closed.

The easiest way to do that is:

    • Go to admin>Manage>Tags
    • Click on the tag to be removed
    • Select all tickets
    • Click 'Remove Tag X from all topics and open tickets'.

If your tag does not appear on this screen,

    • Create a view to list all active tickets with the tag
    • Bulk process the tickets to remove the tag

If you need to bulk process a lot, you may find it easier to create a macro to remove tags and use that on your bulk processing screen.

Finally, check out the Tag Locker app to restrict your agents use of tags.

    Hi Graeme,

    Thank you for the reply

My issue is not removing the Tags from the Tickets

My issue is deleting the Tags from the system, I created 10 tags wrongly and want to just delete them.

I can't see this functionality in Zendesk, and I am quite suprised it doesn't exist

Again this 10 tags aren't used on any ticket, they are just there.

    I hope it made sense

    Thank you

    Kind Regards,

    Rui Ruivo

    Hey Rui,

Graeme's response above is the best possible solution here. There's no way to complete delete tags from the system if they're applied to closed tickets as well. You'd need to delete the closed ticket to completely remove that data from your Support account.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks!

I have the same question as Rui, which still doesn't seem to be answered: how do I delete tags that do not appear on any ticket?

In my example, I created a custom checkbox user field called "subscribed", then checked for 200 contacts. I deleted the custom field, but all 200 contacts are still tagged "subscribed".

Update: I think I figured it out.

Manage > People , then click "tags"...

...then click "remove" on each tag...

    Hi Andrew,

    Thank you for the reply.

That seems like a possible solution will let you know if it works

Have a great rest of the day

    Thank you

    Kind Regards,

It seems backwards (except in the case of typos) to be able to delete newer but not older tags. We've been with Zendesk for 9 years. Things I measured back then: old employees, old issues etc. that I do not need anymore much less need to measure as I create new Explore reports are very frustrating to have still around. Bulk deleting would be even better but that's not available regardless because of the closed status. I'm at upwards of 5 MILLION tickets, literally. I don't need to create explore reports based on super aged data.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

    Hello @...,

I understand how this can be a rather frustrating experience, especially when it comes to dealing with such a rather large volume of tickets. I would strongly suggest creating a set to help you better navigate the date are working with, so you can remove some of those tickets not relevant to you. I've gone ahead and shared an article below that breaks down this process in more detail.

Organizing values by groups and sets

    Best regards.

I don't think any of these answers have answered the initial question (which is my question).

How do you delete a tag that has never been used - that is not applied to any ticket - open or closed?

I clicked People as suggested above, and the tag I want to delete is not listed.

I don't want to delete a tag from a ticket, I want to delete a tag completely so that it no longer displays as an option when you start typing in a ticket's tag field. I don't want other support folks to mistakenly select the tag I want to delete. We do not want to use that tag anymore.

    Thank you!

When I click inside the Tag name (in the admin console) there is no option to delete the tag.  There are no current or historical support tickets against it.
