Allow admin to prevent certain fuzzy search matches

Posted Dec 07, 2022

In fuzzy search, terms match when they have up to two spelling "errors". In some cases, this means that searches return completely irrelevant results, because a search term matches a commonly used (but unrelated) term.

For example, in our product, the word "connect" also returns results for "content" and "contact" - each of these terms is important in our product, but they are unrelated (and unlikely to be typos, like "connecr" or "commect" could be).

It would be nice if an admin could specify certain terms that should not be fuzzy matched together in results.

I completely agree.

We have clients complaining that they struggle to figure out which articles are helpful to them because the search results return so many possible matches, and they feel overwhelmed.

A good example is that I can search for "gender" and had 34 possible matches return. Only 2 of our articles actually contain the word gender - the rest were all matching on terms like "general", "generally" and "generated", and the articles that actually feature the word gender are not sufficiently prioritised.

I understand the intent of fuzzy search and can see how it's picked up those terms, but for our users, it's creating noise more than being helpful.

It would be extremely beneficial for us to be able to disable and/or restrict the intensity of this feature.

Hi Katie, thank you for taking the time to provide us with this feedback. We appologize for the delay on our end in providing you with a response to your feature request.

This is a great feature request and I have added it to the backlog for future consideration. This means that we will think about adding it as a priority later in our planning cycle. It may be that we don't implement a solution exactly as requested. but find a better way to solve the underlying problem of irrelevant search terms matching with search queries.

We are going to leave this post open for comment to allow others to provide their feedback and use cases, however please note as is stated in our Community Guidelines that we can not commit to prioritizing any one piece of feedback we receive in the community.

Hi Gorka Cardona-Lauridsen hoping this is prioritized as we had articles populate with unintended results that could be misconstrued.  The only workaround that we were able to implement was to remove the keyword's similar word from the article.
