Zendesk Web Widget greatly reduces the Page speed

Answered

Posted Jun 23, 2021

We use a Zendesk Web Widget on our site and it greatly affects the performance of the page.
If you check in PageSpeed Insights with a widget, then for us it turns out a critically small number to load the page on mobile. Without the widget, the figure increases by about 50 points.
We want to use the widget and we are all right but we need to do something with the loading speed of the site.
Is there anything you can do to slow down the page load speed?

Hi Yulia,

Thanks for reaching out to our Community!

I'm sorry to hear that the Web Widget is having an impact on the performance of your website. We're constantly looking at ways to optimise the performance of our widget and ensure that you continue to provide the best possible embedded customer experience with the least possible impact on your site. In our Help Centre article with FAQs, we have provided more details on the package size when the Web Widget is first loaded: https://support.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/1260803631829. This will give you a better understanding of the assets we use for the widget. Also, the architecture of the Web Widget is optimised for caching, so once the widget has been loaded for a visitor to your website, it will load much faster on subsequent page loads.

If you have enabled chat in your Web Widget and want to optimise page performance, you can consider using the connectOnPageLoad API. This should reduce the time it takes to display the widget launcher and improve page load results. Please take a look here: https://support.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038807274.

We know how important page performance is to our customers. We're regularly taking steps to reduce the impact of the Web Widget on a web page. In the short and medium-term, we'll be looking at how we can reduce the package size of the widget, and in the long-term, we'll be looking at various other strategies we can use to ensure that the widget does not negatively impact the page speed of a website.

I hope it gives you a better idea of how the Web Widget works on your website and we appreciate your understanding on this matter. We acknowledge that we have a lot of room for improvement and will continue to prioritise initiatives to optimise the package size for each Web Widget configuration.

Let us know if you have further questions!
