Zendesk is officially announcing the End of Life (EOL) for legacy custom objects. Starting July 27, 2026, the legacy custom objects experience will no longer be supported. This includes the legacy APIs, admin interface, and object records created using the previous custom objects framework (also referred to as “Sunshine Custom Objects”).

This announcement includes the following topics:

  • Why is Zendesk making this change?
  • What do I need to do?

What is changing?

Phase 1: Removing option to create new legacy custom objects and relationships

Beginning January 15, 2026, creating new custom objects or relationships using the legacy version will no longer be allowed. However, you can still create new records for existing legacy objects during this period.

Phase 2: Removing legacy custom objects, relationships, and records

Starting July 27, 2026, Zendesk will fully remove legacy custom objects. This means the legacy APIs, admin interface, and all legacy custom object records will no longer be supported or accessible. Customers are encouraged to transition to the new custom objects—released in 2023—which offers a richer, faster, and fully native experience including:

  • Easy to manage admin experience
  • Intuitive field and relationship types
  • Native agent experience
  • No code data management using Data importer
  • Native integrations with Tickets, Users, Organizations using Lookup relationships
  • Integrated end user experience in Help center forms
  • Integrations with native Zendesk capabilities like Triggers, Explore, CCaaS etc.

As we continue to invest in more capabilities in custom objects, the feature continues to evolve and become even more powerful. All customers are encouraged to transition to the new custom objects platform.

Why is Zendesk making this change?

Zendesk has invested heavily in redesigning custom objects as a first-class entity within the platform, ensuring strong integration with Zendesk’s features. Our updated architecture:

  • Provides improved performance, scalability, and reliability
  • Allows seamless no-code configuration using Admin Center
  • Enhances the agent experience and supports deeper Zendesk integrations

By removing legacy custom objects, we can concentrate our engineering resources on accelerating enhancements and expanding integration for the new custom objects experience.

What do I need to do?

These changes affect all accounts that are actively using legacy custom objects. Those accounts must remove their dependencies on legacy custom objects by the removal date. Optionally, you can migrate your legacy custom objects and records to the new custom object experience.

If you're unsure, start by checking whether your account has any legacy custom objects. If you do see legacy custom objects in your account, follow the steps to prepare for the end of life of legacy custom objects.
