What benefit does this have over the forwarding option?

Danny Chrismas thanks for this question.

The biggest advantage is that you are in full control of your email traffic. Every inbound and outbound mail goes through your servers not Zendesk's. Thanks to that you are able to get strict data control, compliance with regulations like HIPAA, and management of email sender reputation.
Exchange Connector helps achieve:

  • Compliance with Regulations and Internal Policies
  • Email Sender Reputation Management
  • Control Over Data Security and Privacy
  • Customization and Flexibility in Email Management
  • Deliverability Controlled and Reported on Customer End
  • Ease of Use with a Mail Protocols-Agnostic Approach

Can I connect to a shared mailbox?

No. The Exchange connector does not support connecting with shared mailboxes.

Is this on the roadmap?

Hi Joshua Snider

it is not on the roadmap at this moment.

Danny Chrismas One advantage I can think of is that forwarding of email out of Exchange can happen immediately. May not always allow MS Defender (or Exchange Online Protection) time to remediate unwanted emails retroactively because they've already been forwarded. I've also noticed that any target email address for Zendesk is listed as “on-prem/external” by Defender due to the way resolution occurs on the Microsoft side.

This is a possible solution I've been seeking for quite some time and is great for new Zendesk customers going through account setup who also use Exchange Online.

However, lack of support for Agent personalization is a hard pill to swallow for us. As is lack of support for a shared inbox (although these can be converted to user mailboxes I suppose). AS IS removing all existing forwarding addresses in both Exchange and Zendesk and recreating them on the exchange side using the connector making cut-over challenging. Even when renaming/readdressing an original target inbox and creating a new target with the same email address, the question then becomes how best to migrate all previous emails to the new target. And then resume archiving after doing so.

While I see no mention of mail-enabled public folders, I'm assuming if shared inboxes aren't a supported scenario then public folders will not be either?

Edit: After posting/rereading the tone of this is much more snarky than intended. Thanks to devs for adding to email capabilities.
